Pick Up Patrol - Now Available

At Providence Elementary we use a system that helps parents make dismissal changes for their child(ren) efficiently and conveniently. It is called PickUp Patrol.

  • PickUp Patrol is a cloud-based web base
  • Eliminates the need for parents to write notes or make phone calls to school
  • To make a dismissal change:
    • Select a date
    • Choose your child and Dismissal Option
    • Hit submit and that’s it!
Advanced Academics Program

Fall referrals for Full-Time AAP screening are due October 15 (this is ONLY for students who are new to FCPS as of January 1, 2024 AND in grades 3-6).  You can learn more about the AAP continuum of services offered at FCPS and find referral forms on the  AAP website.

Providence’s AAP Parent Information Sessions:
*October 9th at 6:00 pm (date change)
*October 10th at 8:00 am

If you have further questions, please reach out to Providence’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Nicole Hanton ([email protected]).

Birthday Celebrations in the classroom

We wanted to provide you with some guidelines regarding birthday celebrations at school. Our goal is to create a positive and inclusive environment for all students.

  • To ensure that everyone feels included, we ask that you refrain from sending food to share. Instead, you may send non-edible items such as pencils, stickers, or small toys.

  • If you plan to send in any items, please notify your child's teacher in advance so they can make appropriate arrangements.

  • We also kindly request that you avoid passing out party invitations in the classroom unless all classmates are invited. This helps to prevent feelings of exclusion.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Second Step - Social and Emotional Learning

Dear Families,

We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.

At Providence, we have just begun teaching Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following: Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy and Kindness, and Problem Solving.

To help you reinforce the language and skills your child is learning, you will receive weekly information from their Second Step teacher. It will include the key concepts for that week and a discussion question that prompts students to practice or talk about the week’s skills with you at home.

If you have any questions about Second Step® Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.

School Board Members: Welcome Back Messages

Messages from both The City of Fairfax & FCPS School Board members

What Is a School Board?

The Fairfax County School Board is responsible for running the public schools in Fairfax County. Twelve School Board members are elected by county voters every four years.

A student representative serves on the board as a non-voting member. They are chosen by their peers each year.

The School Board makes general rules and sets guidelines to ensure Fairfax County Public Schools runs properly. They follow the laws of Virginia and the rules set by the Virginia Board of Education.

Learning about your local School Board is important. Understanding their policies and initiatives can help you advocate for positive changes and ensure that the educational needs of all students are met. There are many ways to get involved.

Learn more about the School Board, how to participate in their meetings, and where to watch their meetings.

Early Release Mondays

Why Early Release Mondays (ERM): To give teachers planning time, students will be dismissed 3 hours early on seven Mondays this year.

Facing a childcare hardship on planned Early Release Mondays? Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by support staff as part of an after-school supervision plan.

Solution: Supervision will be available for students who need it during ERM days.

Action Required:

  • Complete the childcare needs form for each child at PES: https://forms.gle/kTWQsgZVW5bwzpkQ8
  • This form covers the first two Mondays (9/23 & 10/28).
  • Staff will confirm the supervision plan for student
  • We are asking that all families complete the form, whether you need childcare or not

Our first Monday is September 23rd.
Providence will have early release Mondays on the remaining dates and we will dismiss at 12:25pm.

More information can be found here.

Pick Up Patrol - Starting September 11th

Starting September 11th, we will begin using PickUp Patrol. PickUp Patrol is a cloud-based web application that automates the after-school dismissal process by combining powerful tools for school offices and a convenient mobile "app" for parents. It eliminates the need for parents to write notes or make phone calls to change their children’s after-school plans which increases office productivity, decreases classroom interruptions, and assists with the accuracy of end-of-day student safety.

To make a dismissal change you will simply log in, select a date, choose your child’s name and a dismissal option, then click on submit and that’s it! You can make plan changes at your convenience, and submit them days, weeks, or even months in advance. And, for added security, you’ll receive a confirmation email each time a change is made.

All same-day changes need to be submitted prior to 2:00pm in order to be reflected in teacher emails that go to teachers promptly at 2:30pm.

You will receive an email over the next few days from PickUp Patrol with information to create your accounts.  Please visit our website’s PickUp Patrol page

Any questions please contact our student attendance secretary Beth Donohue ([email protected]) or our technology specialist, Gina Shelton ([email protected])
