Dear Providence Parents and Caregivers,
I was reading interims this morning and I am really glad to hear about the many students who are connecting with their teachers and making distance learning work. I am very proud of them and our staff at PES, and I am also very thankful for you as parents and caregivers. As I was reading, I kept thinking of the many family members I have been fortunate to get to know in my time at Providence. Throughout this difficult time, I have mentioned many times how much we miss your children at school. This morning it hit me that I miss you, too! We have a wonderful community, and while we are staying in touch through emails, video conferences, and phone calls, it is not the same as seeing each other’s faces in person, waving at Kiss and Ride or chatting for a moment in the halls during a fun PTA event. I also know that for the most part, it isn’t really about us as adults. However, this is a loss for us too, and we greatly appreciate the way you are sticking with us and encouraging your children to make the most of what we have. Thank you, and please let us know what you and your child need to keep moving forward.
Now that we have settled into this temporary routine, I think it is important to remind you to be aware of the upcoming Fairfax County School Board meetings discussing the possible return to school. The next work session is on Thursday, Oct. 16, and I expect that we might receive additional information soon after. At the end of October, we will welcome a small group of students for in-person learning, and there are ongoing conversations about the return for other cohort groups of students for a hybrid of in-person and distance learning. I don’t have details at this time, but I will keep you informed as I learn of them. I encourage you to stay informed about all options available, in relation to your choices and concerns, and the well-being of your child and family. I will also recommend a few things to consider when I send additional information.
I invite the parents and caregivers of our current kindergarten students to join me for a chance to talk and for me to answer your questions from 4:00 – 5:00 on Wednesday. While I wish we were meeting in person, I will send the link for the virtual meeting through kindergarten teachers next week. I look forward to the chance to talk.
I also invite all PES families to join me on Nov. 4, 2020, at 6:30 p.m., for our annual Title One information meeting. This will be part of our November PTA meeting, which will start immediately after we conclude the Title I conversation. I will explain the federal Title I program and what being a part of it means for us at Providence, and we hope you will stay to be part of the PTA conversation as well. Look for more information and a meeting link from our wonderful PTA soon!
We continue to distribute breakfast and lunch each day, and I recently learned that we also started to distribute snacks and dinner on Oct. 13, 2020. We are fortunate to be able to offer meals for our children and hope that you will take advantage of this offering if you have the need. You can find additional information here.
Finally, I want to say thanks once more to A Place To Stand, the local organization who has provided an invaluable service and a lifeline to many of our neediest families at this challenging time. We greatly appreciate the volunteers who run the organization, manage donations, and deliver them to our families. We also greatly appreciate the generosity and kindness shown to our families through the gracious donations of money and food. I know that our children and their parents were very happy when they received these needed supplies. They will continue to make deliveries this fall, and we have had many questions about how others can help. If you wish to donate food or funds, please sign up here.
Please take care and reach out to me or your child’s teacher if you have questions, concerns, or needs. We appreciate the opportunity to serve your family and our community.
There will be no library curbside check out, pick up, or returns this Wednesday, 10/14. Please check your email next Tuesday, 10/20, to see if you have library books ready for pick-up the following Wednesday (10/21). Thank you!
