Safety Patrol Summer Training Camp

August 15, 2018

Fairfax County Public Schools Transportation is offering an opportunity to train safety patrols before school begins in September! This is not required but highly suggested that students attend.   Wednesday, August 15th 9:00—12:30

We ask students to report to Providence no later than 8:30am.  A bus will be picking up students and patrol sponsors to visit the West Ox Fairfax bus garage.

Transportation will provide the bus and a safety patrol representative to come to Providence for one-on-one training with patrols and patrol sponsor.  During this time, the safety patrol representative will review responsibilities, duties, evacuations, and also will include an opportunity for your patrols to visit West Ox garage. Students will “evacuate” an overturned bus and a smoke bus.  The safety patrols will experience being inside an actual overturned bus and a bus that is filled with smoke (a.k.a. fog machine).

During the overturned bus training they will receive hands on training on how to evacuate through the bus roof hatch, through the side door, and through the back door.  The smoke bus will provide a realistic situation to teach the patrols what to do and how to evacuate the bus should it ever become filled with smoke.  Any students who have asthma or other breathing difficulties should stay outside the smoke bus and observe from afar.

Training is scheduled to end at 12:30 but may end early.  It is recommended that parent(s), adult(s) picking up students arrive at PES at 12:15pm.  Students should be dropped off and picked up at the main entrance of Providence Elementary School.
